Mexican Governor Steps Down Amid Drug Trafficking Charges

The governor of Sinaloa, Ruben Rocha Moya, has stepped down from his position following allegations and charges related to drug trafficking by the United States. This decision comes shortly after Rocha Moya resumed his leadership role, having previously taken a leave of absence to address an investigation by Mexican prosecutors.

On Friday, Rocha Moya announced his return to the governorship of the northwestern state, after pausing his duties in May. However, by Saturday, he requested a temporary and indefinite leave of absence from the state congress. This sudden change has garnered criticism from President Claudia Sheinbaum, who publicly stated that personal interests should never supersede the welfare of the nation and its citizens.

President Sheinbaum’s remarks emerged on social media as a response to Rocha’s announcement. She emphasized that power without principles leads to arrogance and abuse. When addressing Rocha’s situation, she directed journalists to her social media post as her official stance on the matter.

In April, the U.S. Justice Department charged Rocha Moya along with nine other officials from the Morena party. These charges alleged collaboration with the notorious Sinaloa Cartel to distribute drugs within the United States. Such charges marked a historical move, as it was the first instance where a sitting Mexican politician faced public charges from the U.S.

Ruben Rocha Moya, who maintains ties with President Claudia Sheinbaum and her mentor, former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, continues to profess his innocence. He declared on Friday that he has committed no crime and returned to his role with a clear conscience.

The allegations against Rocha Moya also include an event in 2023 where his name surfaced in a letter associated with the Sinaloa Cartel. The letter was penned by a cartel member who claimed to have been on the way to meet Rocha Moya when kidnapped by a rival cartel faction. The cartel member was later handed over to U.S. law enforcement.

Should Rocha Moya be convicted, charges such as narcotics importation conspiracy and possession of machine guns could lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment or a minimum of 40 years in prison.

Amid the ongoing drug war, former U.S. President Donald Trump has pressured Mexico to intensify its efforts. He has often criticized Mexican governance, alleging links to drug trafficking. Trump has offered military support to Mexico, although Sheinbaum has declined such offers.

The Sinaloa Cartel, deemed a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration, remains a significant issue for both Mexico and the United States.
