China announced a postponement of its Chang’e-7 lunar mission, initially scheduled to launch from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province. The mission aimed to search for water ice on the Moon.
The Chinese Manned Space Agency released a statement indicating that current launch conditions are unsuitable and the mission cannot proceed during the planned window this year. The agency’s decision followed a comprehensive assessment based on principles of prudence, reliability, and mission success.
Over recent weeks, preparations at Wenchang for the Chang’e-7 mission were underway. This mission is part of China’s ambitious lunar exploration program, targeting technological advancements. According to Xinhua, the mission planned to explore permanently shadowed craters and conduct environmental studies at the lunar south pole, all key developments as reported by the agency.
Named after a Chinese Moon goddess, the Chang’e program has achieved significant milestones, with the Chang’e-6 having successfully returned samples from the Moon’s far side by 2024.
