1 hour ago 0

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, has been hospitalized following a stroke. The information was confirmed by his office.

According to a statement released on Sunday by Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, the senator is expected to recover fully. Herwitt detailed that Murphy experienced numbness in his arm during his son’s hockey game on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors identified the stroke. Subsequently, he was moved to Johns Hopkins for further observation and is currently responding positively to treatment.

At 53, Murphy is a significant figure within the party. He has actively supported candidates during the midterm elections and is considered a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race. Known for his leadership in foreign policy and oversight of the executive branch, he had recently returned from a multifaceted visit to the Middle East. After this tour, he cautioned that President Trump may intensify his actions against Iran post-midterms.

Murphy’s health incident follows a series of similar experiences among lawmakers this year. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell from Kentucky spent several months away from the Senate due to hospitalization and rehabilitation. Similarly, Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey was absent from the Capitol for months while receiving treatment for depression.

The previous year also saw several Democratic figures hospitalized due to strokes, including Senator Ben Ray Lujan from New Mexico, Senator Chris Van Hollen from Maryland, and John Fetterman during his Senate campaign.
