Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Addresses Defense Ministry Disputes and Military Challenges

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy openly discussed the actions of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, expressing disagreement with Fedorov’s involvement in mass protests and calls for an election. Zelenskyy identified poor decisions in defense spending and inaccurate information from the Defense Ministry that caused an awkward interaction with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Starlink use in Russia.

Zelenskyy revealed figures illustrating Ukraine’s acute shortage of Patriot air-defense missiles needed against Russian ballistic attacks. Deliveries from Western allies have declined over three years as Russian missile strikes have intensified. However, Zelenskyy noted progress on the battlefield, stating Ukrainian forces have nearly fully regained the Dnipropetrovsk region, with a small area still under Russian control.

During a lengthy off-the-record meeting with reporters, Zelenskyy provided a transcript that was released publicly. He commented on Fedorov’s dismissal and discussed various topics including battlefield developments, efforts to counter Russian attacks, peace negotiations, budget issues, and political turmoil over Fedorov’s removal.

Despite positive past relations, Zelenskyy believed Fedorov engaged in missteps. Fedorov’s dismissal followed a fallout with the top military commander, leading to weeks of unsuccessful protests pushing for a reversal of Zelenskyy’s decision. Zelenskyy had offered Fedorov four government options, all refused.

Zelenskyy warned that holding elections amid war risks dividing Ukraine, stating such events would pose great danger. Although pressured, no partners provided safe and legitimate election plans.

Linking Fedorov to an awkward episode with Starlink and Elon Musk, Zelenskyy mentioned misinformation from the Defense Ministry. He previously informed Trump that SpaceX agreed to Ukraine’s use of Starlink for operations in Russia, contingent upon political approval. However, Musk later rejected this proposal, which Trump viewed as Zelenskyy’s misleading the U.S. president.

Zelenskyy criticized the vilification of former military leaders amid protests, emphasizing respect for the armed forces crucial to enabling peaceful protests in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy acknowledged severe financial pressures on Ukraine’s defense efforts. He highlighted a $27 billion budget shortfall, exacerbated by hasty spending decisions. Touching on a corruption investigation, Zelenskyy dismissed claims of personal involvement in any wrongdoing.

The table turned optimistic on the battlefield, with Ukraine nearing full control of Dnipropetrovsk and a new operation in progress. By year-end, Zelenskyy expects parity between territories occupied or retaken since the year began.

He addressed the reduced supply of Patriot missiles while Russian attacks increase. Ukraine has experienced declining shipments, receiving far fewer missiles than needed. Zelenskyy seeks additional Patriots and urges production expansion among U.S. and European partners.

Regarding Starlink alternatives, Ukraine explores a European project as Russia and China develop their systems.

Additional updates include Ukrainian drone debris striking Russian industrial sites and drone attacks causing casualties on both sides. Meanwhile, leaders from Nordic and Baltic nations arrived in Kyiv, symbolizing solid support for Ukraine’s independence efforts. Zelenskyy engaged in meetings with these allies to reinforce their partnership.
