Kurt Busch Shares How Racing Helps Him Cope with Brother Kyle Busch’s Death

NASCAR Hall of Famer Kurt Busch has shared how racing assists him in managing the sudden loss of his younger brother, Kyle Busch, a NASCAR legend who passed away in May. Kyle, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, died at 41 due to complications from severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis, as stated by his family.

Kurt Busch expressed on “The Big Weekend Show” that when he races, he feels his brother’s presence and notices that he can’t hide his mistakes anymore. This awareness helps him cope with the loss. “I see my brothers in the racing world,” Kurt mentioned.

Kurt discussed these feelings after his performance in IndyCar’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a race on a 1.7-mile course including Pennsylvania, Constitution, and Independence avenues. This conversation about his brother occurred shortly after the inaugural “Kyle Busch Day” on August 18, a tribute to honor the late NASCAR icon, reflecting on Busch’s renowned car numbers.

Kurt shared with Fox News the difficulty of comprehending his brother’s sudden departure, stating, “It just feels like someone stole him, and it’s still unfathomable.” He added that racing seems to be the only way he knows to cope with this loss.

The tragedy echoed another recent loss for Kurt when fellow NASCAR driver Greg Biffle died in a plane crash in December. Kyle left behind his wife, Samantha, and their two children. His 11-year-old son, Brexton, may one day carry forward his father’s racing legacy with the No. 8, which Richard Childress Racing has reserved for him once he is old enough to enter NASCAR.

Kurt emphasized the importance of racing as a positive outlet for the grieving family. This allows them to stay connected to Kyle’s legacy while moving forward. “With Brexton racing, he needs to be around his friends and out there racing because that’s what Kyle would have wanted us to do,” Kurt said. “We are trying to find some balance amidst this challenging time.”
