Christian McCaffrey’s Impact and 49ers’ Running Back Strategy

In 2024, McCaffrey missed 13 games due to multiple injuries, impacting the 49ers’ performance as they finished with a 6-11 record and missed the playoffs. Last season marked a turnaround as McCaffrey played every game, accumulating 2,126 total yards from scrimmage and scoring 17 touchdowns, contributing to a strong 12-5 finish and nearly securing the NFC West.

The 49ers are cautious with McCaffrey, managing his practice sessions to prevent undue strain given his past injuries. His recent absence from practice raised concerns among fans about possible new injuries.

“Yeah, obviously, when you don’t practice, the way the media works now it’s a firestorm,” McCaffrey remarked to reporters on Sunday. “But this was part of the plan from the jump… We’re fresh for the duration. I feel great. I feel fresh and it’s good to be back out there.”

The team’s strategy is focused on maintaining McCaffrey’s health throughout the season. Discussions about the 49ers’ running back depth are prominent this offseason.

Rookie third-rounder Kaelon Black, who amassed 1,040 yards and 10 touchdowns with Indiana last season, is positioned as McCaffrey’s main backup. Jordan James has resumed practice following a rib injury, whereas Isaac Guerendo’s recovery from a torn pectoral muscle will sideline him for several weeks.

In response to injury concerns, the 49ers signed veteran running backs Khalil Herbert and Zamir White for additional training camp support. However, their inclusion in the regular 53-man roster is uncertain.
