Freshman Julia O’Keefe Shines in Varsity Debut

St. Laurence freshman Julia O’Keefe is gaining recognition for her skills in volleyball, learning from her father’s guidance. Ed O’Keefe, who set Mount Carmel’s plays in 1992, shared his experience with Julia, passing on valuable skills from a young age. Ed has a background in playing and coaching at the college level as well as continuing to coach on the club circuit.

Julia began her journey as a setter in fourth grade. Her early exposure and training led to a successful varsity debut when St. Laurence defeated Lincoln-Way West with scores of 25-17, 25-16. O’Keefe was instrumental in assisting on 15 out of the team’s 18 kills. She also contributed a kill, a block, and an ace.

Her teammates were quick to praise her performance. Aubrey Martinez, set to attend Ball State, expressed admiration for Julia’s efforts, emphasizing her effectiveness despite being a freshman. Martinez noted O’Keefe’s poise during practices and praised the precision of her sets.

Coach Ellen Yopchick was already familiar with Julia’s capabilities, as she excelled in her eighth-grade team at St. Barnabas, coached by her father. Her presence at the Vikings’ gym was marked by past achievements, such as winning the Diggin’ For A Cure Tournament.

Yopchick highlighted Julia’s calm demeanor and high volleyball IQ, affirming her readiness for varsity competition. Julia’s ability to enhance team dynamics made her an asset for St. Laurence. She is the fourth freshman Yopchick has elevated to varsity during her career.

Julia admitted to experiencing nerves but saw them as a sign of excitement. Her summer achievements added to her reputation, having been recognized as an AAU All-American when her team ranked fifth nationally in Indianapolis.

Her rapport with older teammates has been positive, as she continues to thrive under the encouragement and belief of coaches and fellow players.
