Steve Kerr’s Political Commentary Raises Questions

6 hours ago 0

On Wednesday, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr interrupted reporters at Chase Center. As they packed up after practice, Kerr questioned the absence of inquiries about Tuesday’s midterm elections. He cheekily mentioned expecting a $5,000 check everyone was talking about, referencing President Trump’s promises. “I was so sure about it that I spent it already,” Kerr joked.

Following the GOP’s defeat at the polls, Kerr was eager to discuss the outcome. If Democrats had lost, he would have likely avoided politics, much like his previous silence on China. However, with the Republican defeat, Kerr seized the moment.

Kerr’s political leanings are no secret. His comedic remarks post-practice were not about victory or defeat but about a perceived double standard. Despite endorsing Kamala Harris and speaking at the Democratic National Convention, Kerr tried to present himself as an elder statesman. Warriors’ owner Joe Lacob acknowledged Kerr sometimes went too far in his political comments.

Confronting his past comments, Kerr admitted his silence on Hong Kong issues was intended to safeguard the NBA’s financial ties. He expressed regret for calling Trump a “buffoon,” advocating for respectful political discourse, a stark contrast to his previous rhetoric.

Kerr engages in political commentary when comfortable, avoiding scrutiny. Back in January, he made inaccurate statements about federal immigration enforcement, claiming ICE targeted non-criminals. When presented with ICE’s actual record, Kerr admitted, “I misspoke, and I apologize for the misinformation.” He quickly shut down further questioning.

On Wednesday, when no political questions arose, Kerr reintroduced the topic himself. Yet, when challenged, he pivots back to basketball, avoiding accountability. Kerr, enjoying the podium as his stage, struggles when facing factual challenges.
