Dallas Cowboys’ Defensive Changes Put Sam Williams’ Roster Spot in Jeopardy

The Dallas Cowboys are making significant changes to their defensive lineup, focusing heavily on pass-rushers during the offseason. The team acquired Pro Bowler Rashan Gary, signed former All-Pro Von Miller, and drafted Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham. These moves could result in some current defensive ends being let go.

Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report believes Sam Williams may be one of the players whose position is at risk. He predicts that Williams could be a potential cut as the team finalizes its roster. Davenport commented, “Sam Williams once appeared poised to become a prominent edge-rusher for the Dallas Cowboys, but with the addition of Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, rookie Malachi Lawrence, and Von Miller, the 53-man roster spots seem limited.”

Williams faces competition from Marist Liufau, a key special teams player, and James Houston. Despite the likelihood of Williams being picked up by another team, his future in Dallas seems uncertain.

Over three seasons with the Cowboys, Williams has accumulated 85 tackles, 9.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles. His career faced a setback when he tore his ACL in 2024, missing the entire season. He participated in all 17 games last year but recorded only one sack, indicating a drop in his performance.

Understanding the intense competition brought by the new additions, Williams acknowledges the pressure but sees it as an opportunity for improvement. He stated, “I reflected on all the reports and criticism. To improve, you must recognize your mistakes. I wrote down each negative comment as motivation. By focusing on my own growth and dedication, I aim to let my efforts speak for themselves.”
