Kuminga had several other teams interested in him, including the Los Angeles Lakers, who were seen as strong contenders. The Lakers offered a similar salary and the chance to be a starter. However, insiders revealed to Charania that Kuminga opted for the Timberwolves to pursue a shorter-term deal. This contract allows him to control his future better and potentially re-enter free agency next summer, as explained by ESPN’s Anthony Slater. Kuminga also received offers from the Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers.

In Minnesota, Kuminga joins a reformed roster for the upcoming season. Superstar Anthony Edwards returns, along with defensive expert Rudy Gobert and forward Jaden McDaniels. The addition of point guard LaMelo Ball enhances the team’s potential, making them strong contenders for an NBA title this season. Kuminga is expected to start as power forward and was actively recruited by the Timberwolves during free agency, with Anthony Edwards playing a significant role in the recruitment effort.

Timberwolves’ president Tim Connelly met with Kuminga in Miami for four hours earlier this month. He also had constructive discussions with coach Chris Finch, according to league sources. Kuminga is set to replace Julius Randle and Naz Reid, who were traded away. This move is anticipated to offer a better fit for the team, according to reports by Jon Krawczynski and Sam Amick.

At 23, Kuminga fits well with the young core of the Timberwolves, including Edwards, Ball, and McDaniels, who are all 25 years old.
