Intermittent fasting has become popular as a weight-loss strategy, but research suggests it might also help in managing chronic pain. A study in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity explored how meal timing influences the gut-brain axis, a key communication system between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system.

Intermittent fasting involves specific periods of eating and fasting, focusing on meal timing rather than food type. The Cleveland Clinic defines chronic pain as pain lasting more than three months, often accompanied by cognitive issues and anxiety. Traditional treatments target inflammation or nerve signaling. However, new research indicates meal timing may alter gut bacteria and inflammation, potentially affecting chronic pain.

Researchers at Zhengzhou University in China used animal models to study fasting cycles. They observed that fasting strengthens the intestinal lining. This reduces the leakage of inflammatory compounds into the bloodstream, affecting nervous system tissue.

Analysis showed that fasting boosts levels of the bacterium Alistipes finegoldii. When administered to non-fasting animals, similar improvements in pain and cognitive function were noted. This bacterium produces compounds that convert into hippuric acid, linked to observed benefits.

At the cellular level, hippuric acid influences the STING (Stimulator of Interferon Genes) pathway. Overactivity in this pathway can worsen inflammation, pain, and brain function. The study found that hippuric acid decreases STING activity, reducing inflammatory signaling.

Despite these findings, the study has limitations. It links fasting with changes in gut-brain signaling, but doesn’t prove causation. Animal models were used, so human clinical trials are essential to establish safe fasting protocols for chronic pain.

Responses to fasting may vary due to factors like gut microbiome, health conditions, and genetics. Adhering to fasting schedules is challenging and not suitable for everyone.

While not a cure, the study’s insights could guide new strategies targeting the gut-brain connection. Further research is needed to develop dietary protocols tailored to individual needs.
