Food Bank’s New Facility Boosts Capacity

The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana has expanded its operations with the purchase of a 15,000-square-foot facility. This acquisition, adjacent to its current headquarters on Broadway, allows the nonprofit to more than triple its food rescue capacity. The $2 million project will enable the organization to increase storage from 204 pallets to 750, according to President and CEO Victor Garcia.

A ‘Bread Breaking Ceremony’ commemorated the acquisition on August 27, 2026, at 6510 Broadway in Merrillville. Victor Garcia emphasized the potential for further expansion on this larger campus. They moved 11.4 million pounds of food last year, yet the demand in Northwest Indiana remains at about 20 million pounds.

Strack & Van Til’s President and CEO, Jeff Strack, played a significant role in acquiring this cold storage warehouse. As a member of the Food Bank’s board, he recognized its importance and facilitated the purchase, acknowledging, ‘As a grocery retailer, we understand the importance of cold storage.’

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Denis McDonough, CEO of Feeding America, and U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan. Garcia’s efforts in championing innovation for Feeding America were praised by McDonough, who highlighted the growing need amid federal cuts in food assistance.

Recent weather events, such as the Aug. 11 derecho, underscored the necessity for expanded capacity. Infrastructure improvements like this new facility enhance the Food Bank’s responsiveness and resilience in emergencies.

With the new cold storage, the existing freezer space will transition to refrigerated storage. McDonough expressed his confidence in the Food Bank’s capability to not only feed people but to strive toward ending hunger.

During the event, Rep. Mrvan remarked on the strength of community support, which remains unaffected by adverse weather conditions. He committed to advocating for federal funding to assist those in need.

Garcia acknowledged the collaboration of many organizations, including schools and food pantries, that actively combat hunger. Emphasizing unity, he remarked, ‘Food creates community and strengthens relationships.’ Participants symbolically broke bread to reinforce this shared responsibility.

Food Bank board President Bob Jacobs concluded the event with a call to action, looking forward to continued efforts in their mission to fight hunger.
