Aaron Donald Returns to the Rams: A Game-Changing Move for 2026

After spending nearly two and a half years away from professional football, future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald has ended his retirement. He rejoined the Los Angeles Rams, reportedly signing a one-year contract worth $20 million on Sunday.

Speculation about his potential return had been circulating for several months. Reports indicated Donald was working out with the team and maintaining close communication with members of the organization, including head coach Sean McVay. The idea of teaming up Donald with two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett once seemed improbable.

Now, the Rams, already viewed as strong Super Bowl contenders, appear even stronger as they head into the 2026 season. The prospect that should concern the rest of the league is that Donald doesn’t feel he has lost any of his skills.

“Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I feel like I can still be myself? 100%. If I didn’t feel like that, I wouldn’t be here,” Donald stated to reporters after Sunday’s practice, his first since returning to the team.

Donald detailed his preparation, explaining he recorded and scrutinized every aspect of his training, from conditioning to football-specific drills. In his view, his performance has not declined; it may have even improved.

At 35, Donald last played in the NFL in 2023 before his initial retirement. That year, he accumulated 53 combined tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hits, and eight sacks, making his performance among the best in his position. His departure while still performing at such a high level puzzled many, especially given the Rams’ near title achievements since then. Now, fans no longer need to speculate.

If Donald’s assessment is correct that he feels refreshed and possibly improved, the NFL faces a formidable opponent in the Rams this season.
