Rookies Peterson and Boozer Shine in NBA Summer League

Two of the top rookies from the recent NBA draft faced off Monday night. Darryn Peterson, the No. 2 pick, led the Utah Jazz against Cameron Boozer, the No. 3 pick, and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Peterson stood out in his second NBA Summer League game. He made 8 of 15 field goal attempts, including three three-pointers and three free throws, to rack up 25 points. The former Kansas Jayhawks standout contributed 12 assists, grabbed two rebounds, and secured two steals in the Jazz’s 109-100 win.

“Always, I try to find something about everybody I play against,” Peterson said. “He was the pick after me, so I know he probably had an agenda today as well, so I couldn’t let the ride.”

While Peterson excelled, Boozer also delivered a strong performance with 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal despite the loss. Notably, he hit four three-pointers and boasted a 66.7% shooting percentage.

Boozer’s teammate, Cedric Coward, who ranked among top rookies last season, led the Grizzlies with 23 points.

The Jazz and Peterson will return to the court Tuesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Salt Lake City Summer League. Boozer and the Grizzlies will face off against the Atlanta Hawks in their next Summer League game.

Ahead of June’s NBA Draft, much attention was centered on the top three picks. There were debates about who would be chosen first. AJ Dybantsa from BYU ultimately secured the top spot. Dybantsa expressed confidence that he deserved the top pick, noting he didn’t need to participate in team workouts. He’s viewed as the league’s next emerging star. Meanwhile, Peterson and Boozer aim to prove their worth.

While Dybantsa has not yet played with the Washington Wizards, he is set for a highly anticipated debut on Thursday night against Peterson and the Jazz. Fans may witness the early signs of a potential rivalry between these young talents.
