Judge Rules Against Trump Lawsuit: Lawyers Face Penalties

The Justice Department faced criticism when U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams took action against lawyers representing President Trump in a lawsuit against the IRS. The judge dismissed the case as being filed for an improper purpose.

According to the judge, the lawsuit was meant to gain judicial legitimacy for a settlement without legal foundation.

Williams penalized Trump’s attorneys Alejandro Brito and Daniel Epstein. Brito was referred to the Florida Bar for possible disciplinary action, and Epstein’s ability to practice in the Southern District of Florida was restricted.

Settlement Controversy

The Justice Department, IRS, and Mr. Trump were prohibited from using terms from a contentious settlement as evidence in various proceedings. Williams concluded there was no real dispute between the parties and the case lacked any genuine adverseness.

Numerous former judges had raised concerns about the settlement, noting that the agreement in May ended a $10 billion civil lawsuit over the leak of Trump’s tax returns. The initial settlement included a $1.776 billion fund, meant to compensate individuals claiming federal misuse of power.

Fund Details

Congress and a federal judge opposed the fund, leading Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to halt its progress. However, a provision barring IRS tax claims against Trump, his sons, and affiliated companies survived.

Critics argued the settlement was collusive, fraudulently arranged, and urged Judge Williams to revisit the case. She contested having jurisdiction since Trump sued a federal agency he controlled.

Williams criticized the Justice Department for its settlement with Trump, saying it overlooked duties to protect U.S. interests. Williams claimed the settlement ignored legal norms, aiming to grant immunity to Trump and earmark taxpayer money without lawful purpose.
