Cleveland Browns’ Quarterback Controversy: Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders

1 hour ago 0

The Cleveland Browns have put Deshaun Watson in the quarterback role for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This decision, made by new head coach Todd Monken, has left many fans questioning the logic behind it. Despite Watson’s substantial contract of $230 million, his performance in Cleveland has not met expectations.

Watson faced boos from fans during a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, which he described as “disrespectful” and “personal.” Entering the season, Watson carries significant pressure as he returns from a torn Achilles in 2024. Former NFL player Chad Ochocinco predicts that Watson’s position may be at risk by Week 3 if the team struggles early in the season.

According to Ochocinco, if the Browns start 0-2, they might consider replacing Watson before their home opener against the Carolina Panthers. Ochocinco discussed the situation on his “Nightcap” podcast with Shannon Sharpe, explaining that Watson’s high salary meant he was always the intended starter, despite other potential candidates like Shedeur Sanders.

Watson’s record since joining the Browns includes only 19 starts over three seasons due to injuries and an 11-game suspension in 2022. This contrasts with his successful time with the Houston Texans, where he achieved a passer rating of 104.5. In Cleveland, his rating has dropped to 80.7, with the Browns winning 9 of 19 games.

From the fans’ perspective, Ochocinco understands the frustration, citing Watson’s lackluster performance and history with the team. He suggests that winning could silence critics and rally fan support, provided the Browns can secure victories in their initial games against Jacksonville and Tampa Bay.

Ochocinco’s involvement with DraftKings adds another layer to the football season. The company announced “DraftKings Gameday,” offering free gas to fans in various cities and launching promotions, a new campaign, and initiatives through their DraftKings SERVES program. Ochocinco praises this move as a unique way to enhance the fan experience.
