Details of the Incident
The events unfolded on May 18 when Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, entered the Islamic Center. A security guard managed to engage them, initiating a lockdown that helped protect many, including 140 children present at the time. Tragically, three individuals were killed, including the guard Amin Abdullah.
The Attackers’ Plans
The attackers left behind documents expressing their motivations, including adherence to white-supremacist ideologies. They had planned further attacks on a Jewish temple and a predominantly Black high school. The writings included hateful rhetoric targeting several groups, and cited the Christchurch, New Zealand, mosque shooter as an influence.
Family and Community Response
The community gathered to honor the victims with a vigil, reflecting their solidarity in the wake of violence. Meanwhile, the family of Caleb Vazquez has expressed that he struggled with identity issues and was influenced by harmful content online, attributing these to his radicalization.
