A Challenging Season for Colin McEniry

2 hours ago 0

Unexpected Challenges

Colin McEniry did not foresee his final football season at Marmion unfolding this way. Last year, he earned recognition as the CCL/ESCC Red’s offensive player of the year and attracted interest from Ivy League, Patriot League, and Pioneer League teams. All of these coaches requested his game film from the season’s first three weeks. But just before the first game, Marmion had to adjust when starting quarterback Andrew Saltijeral, a sophomore, was injured in preseason. McEniry, a senior receiver at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, was surprised when asked to step in as quarterback. He recalled his only past experience in the position as playing flag football at a young age. Historically, he played as a tight end during youth football. When last year’s starter transferred, McEniry practiced some quarterback snaps during the summer, preparing as a backup, although coaches wondered about Saltijeral’s readiness before the injury.

Transition and Concerns

Adapting to a new position poses difficulties. McEniry was also a starting linebacker. Coach Adam Guerra identified McEniry as the optimal choice to fill in the quarterback role, recognizing his athletic skill and detailed understanding of the offense. McEniry admitted to uncertainty about future college prospects but gained encouragement from coach Guerra, who emphasized McEniry’s leadership qualities.

Adjustment Phase

“My first full practice, I was taken off all special teams, all defense and there was no contact, but I haven’t gotten hurt in two years playing both ways.”

His initial practice offered no contact, full focus on offense, and was challenging, as he completed just two passes successfully during a 7-on-7 period. This prompted self-doubt. However, during Marmion’s matchup against Racine Lutheran and Lincoln Park, he started gaining confidence. In the first game, he led a 15-play drive ending in a touchdown, instilling belief in his ability to manage the team under pressure. McEniry has shown similar perseverance and leadership in basketball since his sophomore year by playing aggressively on defense.

Progress and Improvement

McEniry showed steady improvement, completing 14 of 24 passes so far. Despite the opening loss, his performance included a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown against Lincoln Park. This marked significant progress, as noted by coach Guerra, who appreciates McEniry’s willingness to embrace his new role.

Future Outlook

Despite limitations, McEniry remains optimistic about team success, recognizing expanded playoff opportunities and the challenges posed by a more competitive schedule. The Cadets are adjusting to new possibilities and McEniry believes they can surprise opponents even as he plays away from his usual receiver spot.
