Husband and Co-defendants Face Trial in England for Alleged Abuse

A man accused of raping and sexually abusing his wife, along with a group of men, is set to go on trial in England. The trial begins on Tuesday in Manchester. The defendant, in his 60s from Stockport, is charged with conspiring to drug and rape his wife while she was unconscious, according to British police statements from June.

To protect the alleged victim, U.K. law prohibits naming the defendant. The man is charged with 48 offenses, but reports mention he pleaded guilty to 15. These charges include five rape counts, three sexual assaults, six assault by penetration, and one count of sharing intimate images, as reported by Greater Manchester police.

He rejects 11 rape counts, two attempted rape charges, seven assault by penetration cases, four sexual assault incidents, and several conspiracy charges related to abuse and administering substances with intent, detailed by the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service.

The trial involves a total of 12 men, aged between 28 and 73. They allegedly participated in the abuse or aided in drugging the victim, enabling further crimes.

Comparisons have emerged with Gisèle Pelicot’s public testimony against her ex-husband and others in a notable French trial in 2024. Pelicot made her case public, opting out of anonymity during the four-month proceeding. Her ex-husband and 51 other men were convicted, with Dominique Pelicot receiving a 20-year sentence.
