ICE recently arrested Giovana Mercedes Moreno Ochompy in connection to a triple murder tied to the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. She had previously been released by Chicago police due to the city’s sanctuary policies, which do not notify ICE. Tom Homan, the former acting ICE director, criticizes these policies as obstacles to federal law enforcement and threats to public safety.
In New Jersey, a tragic incident occurred involving an illegal immigrant from Guatemala. Maria Cobon-Guzman faced manslaughter charges after a crash that killed a 9-month-old boy in a grocery store parking lot. The boy was declared dead at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Authorities reported that Cobon-Guzman struck the boy’s mother and knocked over the baby carriage carrying him and his sister. A DHS spokesperson blamed immigration policies for the incident.
“An innocent baby would still be alive today had it not been for Joe Biden’s disastrous open border and reckless immigration policy,” the spokesperson stated.
Another individual, Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, faced charges for endangering welfare by allowing Cobon-Guzman to drive her car despite being unlicensed. Both women entered the U.S. illegally during the Biden administration. Lazaro-Flores had entered five times during October 2023, each time removed shortly afterward.
The Ocean County Jail faces pressure to uphold ICE’s detainers to remove these individuals, as expressed by the DHS. Despite these efforts, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, who supports the state’s Immigrant Trust Directive, has yet to comment on the issue. This directive restricts voluntary assistance New Jersey law enforcement can provide to DHS.
Republicans in New Jersey argue that the state’s leadership fostered conditions that led to such tragedies. Calls for cooperation with ICE detainers are mounting. A statement from the state party emphasized that Governor Sherrill should prioritize New Jersey’s safety above sanctuary policies. They press for compliance with federal authorities when individuals are charged with serious crimes.
