Vice President JD Vance expressed uncertainty regarding whether he would receive former President Donald Trump’s endorsement if he runs for president in 2028. Vance made these remarks in a recent interview with journalist Mark Halperin on the platform 2Way. This conversation occurred shortly before the upcoming midterm elections, when Republicans and the White House are concentrating on maintaining control of Congress.
During the interview, Vance emphasized that his primary focus is the midterms. He also expressed doubt about a future presidential run. However, he stated, “I think if I run, the president will endorse me.”
“Right away?” Halperin asked.
Vance replied, “I would think so, but I don’t know, man. I haven’t talked to him about it.” He later explained that it might be acceptable for him to share his ambitions with Trump without receiving an immediate endorsement. Vance commented, “I think there’s something to be said for people actually running their own race.” The former president’s endorsement, Vance noted, is significant, but allowing candidates to run independently could be valuable.
Halperin referenced Vance’s earlier statements about Trump’s influence, suggesting that whoever gains Trump’s endorsement in the Republican primary will likely secure the nomination. Vance agreed, noting that endorsements matter in both parties, but Trump’s holds more weight. “Trump’s endorsement signals to voters that a candidate is not beholden to the party’s elite,” Vance stated.
Vance elaborated, “That’s the person they say, ‘Okay, if Trump is with a guy, that must mean that the elites are against that guy.'” He believes Trump’s endorsement is unprecedented in political history due to this dynamic.
Vance also addressed his relationship with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s previous mention of them as a “dream team.” Trump has teased the possibility of endorsing either Vance or Rubio in the 2028 race but hasn’t specified which candidate would lead the ticket. Despite this, Vance expressed his admiration for Rubio, stating, “I love Marco. I think he’s a great secretary of state. He has become a very dear friend.” He emphasized that both focus on serving the American people effectively.
Currently, Vance remains uncertain about Trump’s potential endorsement but continues to prioritize his immediate political commitments.
