Joe Rogan Critiques Trump’s Lake Ontario Renaming Amid Iran Conflict

Podcaster Joe Rogan criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” He suggested this move aims to distract Americans from the ongoing conflict with Iran. During Tuesday’s episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with comedian Brian Simpson, Rogan, who has openly criticized the Trump administration’s involvement in Iran, argued that the lake’s renaming pulls focus from what he described as a conflict the U.S. cannot win.

On August 27, Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal geographic naming systems to use “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario. The change coincides with deteriorating U.S.-Canada relations and escalating trade tensions. It affects only U.S. federal usage, leaving Canada’s usage unchanged and not creating a new international name for the lake.

Responding to Rogan’s comments, White House Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said, “Canada has been a bad neighbor by ripping off our country for years. President Trump is committed to protecting American industries and workers. Thanks to his leadership, we are putting America back on the map.”

Rogan remarked during Tuesday’s podcast, “To distract you from the fact that we’re in a war that we can’t win in Iran.” He added, “It doesn’t make any sense. Like who cares, it’s Lake Ontario, it’s a good name, we’ve had that name forever.”

Rogan has increasingly voiced his concerns over Trump’s handling of the Iran situation. He has previously challenged the administration’s decision to engage in the conflict and suggested a potential Israeli influence. Rogan also noted that Trump’s supporters might feel let down by the decision to enter the war.

The Lake America issue has grown into a political and cultural discussion. Google reflects “Lake America” for U.S. users while maintaining “Lake Ontario” for Canadian users, highlighting the limited impact of the name change.

Rogan’s comments appear amidst significant repercussions for the Trump administration. As the U.S. pursues military actions against Iran, public support for the war has waned.

A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll released Monday found that 68% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran war. Furthermore, 54% disapprove of U.S. military actions in Iran. Only 25% say Trump has managed the war very or somewhat well, whereas 68% say not well.

The poll, conducted from August 21-26, 2026, involved 1,000 respondents and has a margin of error of 3.5%.

Another YouGov/Economist poll last month showed Trump’s approval on Iran at 30%, with 62% disapproving. Only 25% agreed with the war decision, while 57% opposed it. The poll surveyed 1,611 U.S. adults from August 14-17, 2026, with a 3.4% margin of error.

Regarding the lake’s renaming, a YouGov/Economist survey revealed 17% approval compared to 68% disapproval. It surveyed 1,592 U.S. adults from August 28 to 31, 2026, with a margin of error of 3.5%.

Additionally, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed only 14% of Americans supported renaming Lake Ontario, while 63% opposed. The poll surveyed 1,023 U.S. adults from August 28 to 30, 2026, with a margin of error of 4%.
