Sen. Ed Markey Wins Democratic Nomination for Senate in Massachusetts

Sen. Ed Markey from Massachusetts has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, as announced by The Associated Press. He overcame a challenge from Rep. Seth Moulton. This victory represents another achievement for the party’s progressive wing during this election cycle, while simultaneously marking a setback for advocates of generational change and new leadership directions within the party.

In several recent primaries, generational divides have been evident, with younger Democratic candidates often running as progressives and challenging older incumbents, urging the need for fresh ideas. Nevertheless, Markey managed to counter dissatisfaction within the party’s establishment by emphasizing his longstanding commitment to progressive principles.

Born in Malden, Markey turned 80 this July. He first entered Congress in 1976. Moulton, who started his political career more than thirty years later in 2014, repeatedly advocated for a new generation of leadership throughout the race. Despite the age difference, Markey focused on his dedication to progressive causes.

“This is the most energized I’ve ever been, fighting Donald Trump every single day, fighting his agenda to undermine families all across our country,” Markey declared during a debate hosted by WWLP in July. “And I lead that fight.”

Markey’s lead in the polls was evident. His supporters felt his progressivism was more important than concerns over age. His backing included endorsements from prominent figures like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, as well as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In an August debate, Markey criticized Moulton for not supporting transgender rights adequately. He cited Moulton’s comments from 2024 regarding how Democrats should address trans issues, particularly in sports, which drew controversy. Moulton apologized for any hurt caused by his statements and reiterated his support for LGBTQ rights.

This victory marks the second time Markey has overcome a primary challenge from a younger candidate, the first being against Rep. Joe Kennedy III in 2020. Now, Markey will compete against attorney John Deaton for the Senate seat in November. Given Massachusetts’ strong Democratic leanings, Markey is heavily favored to win.
