Tensions Rise as Putin Accuses Ukraine of ‘State Terrorism’

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of engaging in what he calls ‘state terrorism.’ This accusation comes after Zelensky’s warning about the safety of Russian airspace. Zelensky claimed that increased drone activity is making Russian skies unsafe for civilian aviation. According to Zelensky, the skies over Russia are increasingly reserved for drone activity.

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in 2022, most airlines have avoided Russian airspace. However, carriers from countries like China, India, and the United Arab Emirates continue to fly over the region. Zelensky, as reported by the BBC, affirmed that Ukraine does not pose a direct threat to civilian aviation. He indicated that the presence of drones in the airspace is significant and must be acknowledged.

In response to Zelensky’s remarks, Putin labeled them as ‘state terrorism’ and vowed to persist with attacks on Ukraine. Putin commented on requests for negotiations with Ukraine, stating that Russia does not engage with what it considers terrorist actions.

This exchange occurs amidst memories of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down over Ukraine in 2014, resulting in 298 deaths. Investigations have held Russia accountable, but the Kremlin has consistently denied both responsibility and involvement. The International Civil Aviation Organization had previously found Russia liable, reinforcing a Dutch-led investigation’s conclusions.

In a separate incident, Germany has accused Russia of attempting a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month. A drone laden with explosives was neutralized near a Ukrainian aircraft. In response, Germany has taken measures against Russia, including the closure of a Russian consulate. However, Russian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, dismissed these claims as baseless provocations by Germany to aggravate tensions.

Adding another layer, CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s secretive visit to Moscow suggests ongoing international diplomatic maneuvers. The visit was reportedly intended to deliver a warning to Moscow and urge a reduction in military support for Iran. While Ratcliffe met with Russian intelligence officials, President Donald Trump noted the intention was to help conclude the conflict with Ukraine.
