China’s Geely Auto Group Aims to Dominate Global Auto Industry

On the outskirts of Ningbo, a Chinese port city, lies a factory surrounded by green hills topped with wind turbines harnessing the East China Sea’s gales. Here, the Geely Auto Group produces the Zeekr, a luxury brand merging the concepts of Generation Z and Krypton.

Factory Automation and Innovation

The factory, operational since 2023, is 99% automated, featuring AI-guided mechanical arms assembling vehicles. Human workers provide oversight. Zhao Chunlin, Zeekr’s Vice President of Manufacturing, formerly worked for General Motors and admires their legacy.

Zhao asserts that China’s EV industry, driven by domestic demand for excellence, leads globally. Chinese customers, he says, prioritize choice and quality.

Trade and Market Penetration

Geely plans to sell Zeekrs in North America, facilitated by a trade deal signed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping in January. Under the agreement, 49,000 Chinese EVs will be sold in Canada with tariffs reduced from 100% to 6%.

Chinese imports could capture nearly 25% of Canada’s previous year’s EV market, competing against U.S. brands with the advantage of lower prices.

In Australia, Chinese EVs have risen to over 30% of the market, a trend mirrored by increasing shares in Europe, where tariffs exist.

Potential Impact on the U.S. Market

While the U.S. government blocks Chinese vehicles with tariffs and bans, Zhao suggests China’s automakers offer great potential for collaboration.

He believes Chinese EVs provide a superior driving experience, demonstrated by CBS News’ test drive of the Zeekr 9X plug-in hybrid, valued at around $70,000—half the cost of a Cadillac Escalade.

Design and Features

The 9X hybrid, likened to China’s Rolls Royce, displays a design reminiscent of the Range Rover SUV. Its interior boasts luxury elements like plush seats, a Naim Audio sound system, and semi-autonomous capabilities.

The hybrid smoothly accelerates from 0-100 kilometers per hour in four seconds, with a range of 745 miles per fuel and charge.

The self-parking feature addresses drivers’ common parking concerns, showcasing practical innovation.

Chinese Cars on Global Stage

Once not taken seriously in Western markets, Chinese cars like Zeekr now match or surpass many U.S. and European brands in perceived quality. Zeekr operates in over 50 countries and will soon export the 9X to Europe and the Middle East.
