Moldova Faces Increasing Russian Pressure Amid Ukraine Conflict

As the war in Ukraine approaches Moldova’s borders, Moldova grapples with intensified pressure from Russia. This comes after Russia’s strikes on border infrastructure, threatening Ukraine’s economy and access to European markets.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Stanislav Secrieru, national security advisor to Moldova’s President Maia Sandu, highlighted the serious threat posed by Russia’s recent actions against Ukrainian-Moldovan border infrastructure. Secrieru revealed that in August, Russia initiated strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure along the Moldovan border, disrupting Ukrainian grain exports. This has forced Moldova to become a crucial transit route for grain towards Romania’s ports, prompting the Moldovan government to halve rail transit tariffs.

“With Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea ports under attack, Moldova is now a vital transit route. We’ve cut transit tariffs by half to keep exports moving,” Secrieru stated.

On November 25, 2025, Moldovan police recovered a Russian drone after multiple drones flew over Moldova’s airspace. The drone crashed in the Floresti district. These routes are crucial for Ukraine’s economy, and Secrieru emphasized that Russia aims to cut them off. He detailed increased violations of Moldova’s airspace, seeking to intimidate Moldova into withdrawing its support for Ukraine.

Despite these threats, Moldova persists in backing Ukraine and keeping these vital export corridors open. President Maia Sandu condemned Russia’s repeated airspace violations, labeling them as intimidation tactics. Moldova recorded five violations on its independence eve, highlighting ongoing threats.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moldova has experienced several violations of its airspace, with Russian missiles and drones crashing on its territory. Secrieru reported Russia violated Moldovan airspace 17 times in August, marking the highest monthly violations since the invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Moldova reinforced the shared struggle of both nations against Russian threats. During Moldova’s Independence Day celebrations, Zelenskyy criticized Russia’s disruption of their lives.

“Russia attempts to derail lives in Ukraine, in Moldova, and Romania. This is the ‘Russian world.’ It harms and destroys, but we will prevail,” Zelenskyy declared.

With Moldova and Ukraine applying for EU membership after Russia’s invasion, these destabilization efforts hamper their EU ambitions. Moldova remains a significant target for Russian influence, and Russia maintains troops in the breakaway region of Transnistria.

Ivana Stradner, a researcher at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, commented on Russia’s interference. She believes Moscow tests Europe through hybrid warfare, gauging its response. Moldova serves as a rehearsal for testing the Baltics, posing concerns for neighboring countries.
