Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Trent Thornton showed his displeasure with his performance in a 9-5 loss against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. The game took place at Wrigley Field.
Thornton entered the match in the top of the fourth inning with the Cubs down 6-5. He successfully ended a scoring threat by striking out Luis Lara. However, his performance in the fifth inning sparked frustration.
Thornton struck out Christian Yelich initially, but then allowed three consecutive baserunners. Joey Ortiz walked, followed by singles from Cooper Pratt and Jackson Chourio.
Manager Craig Counsell then removed Thornton from the game. Upon entering the dugout, Thornton expressed his frustration by throwing his glove and shouting.
Ryan Rolison took over pitching duties and retired the next two batters, keeping the score at 6-5. Thornton has been a reliable reliever for the Cubs in his first season, with a 3.40 ERA over 45 innings and three saves in 44 appearances.
The Cubs struggled to score thereafter and failed to win the game. The loss marked the third defeat in a significant four-game series against their National League Central opponents, the Brewers.
The Cubs, holding a 78-62 record, seek a series split against the 87-53 Brewers in the final game scheduled for Thursday at 7:15 p.m. ET.
