Dylan Sprouse Reflects on Child Acting Career and Its Challenges

Former Disney Channel actor Dylan Sprouse recently shared his thoughts on the challenges he faced as a child actor. On his podcast, Wildmen, the 34-year-old discussed the pressures of being in the entertainment industry from a young age. He spoke with his co-host, Brendan Columbus, about these experiences during an episode featuring guest Mark Indelicato.

Sprouse highlighted the demanding nature of child acting, likening it to child labor. He expressed his eagerness to discuss the topic with Indelicato, noting their shared experiences in the industry. “When you work at that age,” he explained, “it’s akin to child labor, similar to how children once worked in mines.”

Reflecting on his own career, Sprouse admitted to facing “mental hurdles” in the entertainment field as an adult. He described the difficulty of remaining in the industry he entered as a child, saying, “I act like a kid anyway. So, I wonder if I’m just always chasing that.”

During the podcast, Sprouse and Columbus introduced Indelicato, who played Justin Suarez on Ugly Betty between ages 12 and 15. Sprouse discussed the rigorous schedule child actors endure, comparing it to working a full-time office job. “It’s a day job,” he said, “with similar hours and responsibilities.”

Dylan and his twin brother, Cole Sprouse, began acting at six when they appeared in Big Daddy with Adam Sandler. Their career started even earlier on Grace Under Fire, sharing the role of Patrick Kelly from infancy until five years old. Their breakthrough came with the Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and its spin-off The Suite Life on Deck.

After the spin-off, Dylan took a hiatus from acting to pursue video game design at Gallatin School of Individualized Study. He resumed acting after graduating in May 2015, though less frequently than Cole. Dylan spoke to Indelicato about the “void” he felt after projects ended as a kid, tying his self-esteem to being on set.

Cole has also openly discussed their early acting days, noting their mother’s financial motivations. On “The Diary of a CEO” podcast in March 2023, Cole mentioned their mother’s decision to push them into acting, saying it fulfilled her personal needs. He contrasted this with their father’s desire for a normal childhood.

After custody was granted to their father, the family faced financial hardship. Cole recalled losing assets from their early career due to their mother’s financial mismanagement.
