Women approaching midlife often encounter unexpected physical changes, one of which is dry eyes. This eye condition is common among women in perimenopause and postmenopause, as Hilda Hernandez Nash experienced earlier this year. Her symptoms included uncomfortable contact lenses and eyes that felt like sandpaper, alongside redness, wateriness, and swelling.
Initially, Hernandez Nash suspected pink eye, but an eye doctor diagnosed her with dry eyes. Around half of all women in the menopausal transition report similar symptoms, according to research. Lauren Gormley, optometrist and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins, notes that while men also suffer from dry eyes, women over 50 display a rate twice that of men in the same age group.
The Role of Hormones
Dry eye occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or tears dry too quickly. Often, the issue arises from the meibomian glands, which keep tears from evaporating rapidly. Hormones such as androgens regulate oil production in these glands. Declines in these hormone levels during menopause lead to poorer quality oil, faster tear evaporation, and ocular inflammation.
Moreover, the lacrimal glands involved in tear production contain estrogen receptors, suggesting estrogen level shifts could also affect dry eye. Dr. Kelly Nichols from the University of Alabama at Birmingham notes many unknowns remain in this area.
Other Contributing Factors
Many factors exacerbate dry eyes, like continuous computer usage, which reduces blinking frequency, leading to inadequate tear spread. Contacts, medications such as blood pressure drugs, and conditions like allergies, rosacea, and eczema can also contribute.
Impact on Everyday Life
Dry eyes can affect daily activities, from work efficiency to reading and driving. Dr. Kelly Nichols stresses the importance of seeing a doctor to avoid quality of life deterioration. Preeya Gupta, an ophthalmologist, warns that untreated dry eye can worsen, risking infection and corneal scarring.
Treatment Options
While dry eyes are chronic, many treatments exist to alleviate symptoms. Alternatives range from at-home remedies to prescription medications. Specialist procedures also aim to improve oil glands function, albeit at a cost not always covered by insurance.
Gormley advises lifestyle alterations, including reducing screen time and consuming omega-3 rich foods, like salmon and flaxseeds, which aid eyelid oil glands function. Despite mixed research results with omega-3 supplements, patient anecdotes reveal benefits.
Managing dry eyes often entails identifying all contributory factors and trying various treatments. As Gormley points out, “Once you start to identify where the dry eye is coming from and you start to treat the dry eye that the patient has, it makes a huge difference.”
