2 hours ago 0

Kyle Teel’s recovery timeline initially had him missing six to twelve weeks following a sprained left ankle sustained on July 20 in Texas. Teel expressed his relief at returning sooner than expected, saying the injury felt severe initially. He credited his early return to feeling blessed and grateful. Teel rejoined the Chicago White Sox lineup on Friday as they commenced a series with the Minnesota Twins.

This season has been challenging for Teel, with injuries limiting his play to just 19 games. His manager, Will Venable, described the setbacks as tough but emphasized the team’s excitement at having Teel back. His presence brings energy to the clubhouse and on the field. Teel’s journey through injuries included a right hamstring strain from the World Baseball Classic and a knee ligament sprain during a rehabilitation assignment; both delayed his debut until June 22.

Teel’s current stats include a .190/.271/.317 slash line with two home runs and 14 RBIs. His recent ankle injury occurred during a game against the Rangers as he attempted a swipe tag at the plate. Despite his struggles, general manager Chris Getz noted optimism from both Teel and medical staff, hoping his lower-half injuries are behind him. The team recognizes Teel’s importance and is cautious in ensuring his strength and productivity throughout the last month of the season.

During a rehab stint with Charlotte, Teel went 7-for-22 (.318), showing improvement and readiness to return to catching full-time. In a roster change, the Sox optioned Drew Romo to Charlotte, maintaining him on the taxi squad for potential needs. Romo’s performance includes a .141/.239/.288 slash line with seven home runs in 60 games.

Teel will work alongside Jake Rogers in the catching role. According to Venable, matchups against opposing pitchers will determine their playing time. The emphasis will be on strategizing against right-handed pitchers, given the team’s immediate schedule.

As the White Sox pursue playoff contention, Teel’s return is timely. They held a 2½-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians, who won a game against Detroit earlier in the day. Teel expressed excitement to contribute during this pivotal part of the season, focusing on daily efforts and the significance of each game leading up to the playoffs.
