The Kansas City Chiefs have added Justin Tucker to their roster as Harrison Butker faces challenges this season. Butker’s performance has been under scrutiny following his 11 of 16 field-goal record, missing four times in his last four games. In response, the Chiefs brought Tucker in for competition. However, special teams coordinator Dave Toub affirmed Butker’s position as the starting kicker.
Toub expressed confidence, saying, “Butker is our kicker. We’re trying to improve and get Butker right.” Even as Tucker provides competition, Butker showed resilience during practices. Despite challenging 28-mile-an-hour winds, Butker achieved a flawless 10-for-10 accuracy in recent practice sessions.
The Chiefs evaluated Ben Sauls, Harrison Mevis, and Tucker. Toub explained their decision to include Tucker due to his proven kicking skills, noting his successful workouts with other teams. “He was hitting the ball great,” Toub remarked, acknowledging Tucker’s impressive performance during a “grueling workout” with multiple long-distance kicks.
Tucker’s signing followed a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL’s conduct policy due to sexual misconduct allegations involving 16 women, reported by The Baltimore Banner. Tucker denied these allegations, maintaining he acted appropriately during all professional sessions.
The team’s decision to sign Tucker prompted media criticism. Toub acknowledged the volatility of the kicker position, referring to Butker’s missed 45-yard field goal against the Seattle Seahawks as crucial. “In tight games, those short kicks are vital,” Toub stated.
The Chiefs are set to face the Denver Broncos with Butker still expected to kick. The situation remains dynamic as Tucker’s presence provides both competition and motivation.
