Democrats Seek Support in Nantucket Ahead of Elections

This summer, Democrats have been actively visiting Nantucket to bolster their campaign funds. The wealthy island in Massachusetts is a prime location for political fundraising, especially as candidates and leaders gear up for the upcoming November elections.

Both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard attract substantial donor interest, and this trend continues as Democrats tap into these affluent networks. According to federal filings, by June 30, the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee held a combined $136 million in cash. In comparison, their Republican counterparts had amassed roughly $277 million.

Notable Democratic Visits

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York, Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, and Representative Seth Moulton from Massachusetts have been seen participating in fundraising events on the island. Highlighting this, Sen. Jon Ossoff from Georgia attended a fundraiser on August 29 hosted by Elizabeth Frawley Bagley, a prominent Democratic figure and a U.S. ambassador to Brazil.

Nantucket is not the only destination; Martha’s Vineyard also sees similar activity. Former President Barack Obama was on the Vineyard on August 31 for an event arranged by Eric Holder to support the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Wes Moore, considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028, appeared at a DNC fundraiser on Martha’s Vineyard on August 8, reinforcing his focus on national prominence over local Maryland issues, according to Maryland GOP criticism.

Republican Engagement

Republicans are no strangers to the wealth of Nantucket’s donor base. In 2022, Vice President JD Vance, then running for the Senate, joined Florida Senator Rick Scott and other Senate candidates for a fundraising event on the island. This collective effort underscores the competitive fundraising environment present in these exclusive locations.

The focus on key battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin remains high on both sides as they strive to gain political advantage ahead of the elections.
