Cecilia Zandalasini Reacts to FIBA Officials After Italy’s Loss to U.S.

Italian women’s basketball standout Cecilia Zandalasini expressed anger towards FIBA officials following Italy’s narrow defeat against the U.S. in their Women’s World Cup matchup on Sunday. The game ended with a 55-52 score in favor of the U.S.

In the closing moments, Zandalasini tried to level the score with a three-pointer, facing defense from Jackie Young. While dribbling, Zandalasini seemed to have reacted as if Young made contact with her face. Despite this, no foul was called, forcing Zandalasini to attempt a contested shot, which she missed as the game concluded.

After the match, Zandalasini directed her frustration at the officials, requiring intervention from staff to calm the situation. Later, she issued an apology for her behavior.

“I would like to apologize for the way I reacted,” Zandalasini stated during the post-game press conference. “It wasn’t sportsmanship at all. I just wanted to apologize to the team and the referee. When I wear this jersey, it’s just a different me I guess. I feel embarrassed. I just wanted to say that out loud and to whoever watches.”

Zandalasini contributed significantly to her team’s efforts, scoring 14 points and securing seven rebounds during 27 minutes of play.

Throughout the match, Italy maintained pressure on the U.S. team. However, the American players capitalized on their interior game strategy, earning free points through foul shots.
