Adventurer Bear Grylls, known for his daring expeditions, addresses a common misconception: he is not fearless. Despite scaling Mount Everest and navigating rapids in Zambia, Grylls explains that fear plays a significant role in his life and work. He views fear as an ally that keeps him alert and enhances his performance.
The TV show Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge showcases his survival skills in remote locations with minimal supplies. Grylls suggests that many avoid fear, which weakens their ability to handle adrenaline in real-life scary situations. This can lead to confusion and lack of clarity.
“Fear isn’t an enemy. It’s something that nature gives you to allow you to stay sharp and perform well,” Grylls notes.
Grylls offers his take on the acronym S-T-O-P to help manage fear, a concept originally by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan.
S-T-O-P: A Guide to Facing Fear
S – Stop and Step Back
Encounter everyday stressors like deadlines or job interviews without reacting impulsively. Instead, pause and regain control.
T – Take a Break
When overwhelmed, take a moment to distance yourself. Engage in deep breathing or quick mindfulness practices to regain composure.
O – Observe
In stressful times, it’s easy to focus narrowly. Broaden your awareness to evaluate your surroundings and recognize available options and support.
P – Plan
Once calm, devise a strategic action plan. Be ready to adapt, as circumstances can change.
Grylls emphasizes that the core of survival is not external tools but internal qualities like resilience and adaptability. His advice is to embrace uncertainty and maintain courage when facing challenges.
“If I had to choose three things [to bring on any expedition], I would make them a resourceful spirit, a determined heart, and a courageous attitude,” Grylls shares.
