Buc-ee’s Trademark Lawsuit Against Beaver’s Mini Mart Sparks Controversy

2 hours ago 0

Buc-ee’s, a well-known Texas convenience store chain, has found itself in hot water after filing a trademark infringement lawsuit against Beaver’s Mini Mart in Beavercreek, Ohio. The lawsuit has triggered a backlash among Ohioans and gained attention beyond the state.

This is not the first time Buc-ee’s has defended its beaver logo in court. The chain is known for its legal actions to protect its mascot, with previous cases targeting various cartoon animals that resemble its buck-toothed beaver.

The lawsuit claims Beaver’s Mini Mart’s beaver logo is too similar to Buc-ee’s branded beaver, known as Bucky. Buc-ee’s requested a jury trial in federal court to assert its trademark rights.

Beaver’s Mini Mart occupies a smaller building in Beavercreek compared to Buc-ee’s expansive new store near Dayton, which features 100 gas pumps and 700 parking spaces. The timing of Buc-ee’s entry into Ohio coincides with the trademark conflict, as the chain filed the lawsuit four months after opening its local store.

To address the issue, Buc-ee’s said it tried to reach Vic Boparai, the owner of Beaver’s Mini Mart, without success. It felt forced to sue after recognizing the potential trademark conflict.

Boparai issued a statement thanking the community and supporters nationwide. He expressed gratitude for the backing his small business has received amid the legal challenges.

Beavercreek City Council responded by making the beaver an official part of the city’s history, ensuring its place in the community’s narrative. The council passed a resolution, supported by the local school mascot, backing the beaver as symbolic.

The controversy sparked a wave of support for Beaver’s Mini Mart. Social media posts, GoFundMe campaigns, and local bakery collaborations have emerged to help with legal fees associated with the lawsuit. Efforts include selling cookies adorned with beaver logos, reflecting a community-wide stand for supporting local businesses.

Republican Ohio Governor Mike DeWine criticized the lawsuit, calling it absurd given the city’s name, Beavercreek. The sentiment resonates with customers, some of whom have chosen to boycott Buc-ee’s in protest, wanting the chain to make better business decisions.
