John E. Sununu Wins GOP Senate Nomination in New Hampshire

Former Senator John E. Sununu secured the Republican Senate nomination in New Hampshire on Tuesday. This high-stakes race could affect whether Republicans maintain Senate control in the midterms. Sununu defeated former Senator Scott Brown, according to the Associated Press. They were competing for the seat of retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who was the first woman elected as both governor and senator in U.S. history.

Republicans have not won a Senate seat in New Hampshire for 16 years, but they see this open Democrat-held seat as a prime chance to strengthen their narrow majority. Sununu will face the winner of the Democratic primary, either Rep. Chris Pappas or scientist Karishma Manzur, in the general election.

Sununu has strong political ties, being the son of John H. Sununu, a former governor, and brother to Chris Sununu, also a former governor. He has previously held positions as a congressman and senator.

President Donald Trump endorsed Sununu in February despite their past disagreements. Sununu also received support from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Brown criticized Sununu for his endorsements, claiming Sununu is tied to Trump and other political leaders rather than the people of New Hampshire.

Sununu responded by focusing on his commitment to New Hampshire, emphasizing local support and grassroots momentum.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen is retiring, concluding her historic tenure as the nation’s first woman to hold both gubernatorial and senatorial positions.

Sununu expressed disagreement with the Trump administration’s trade policies toward Canada, considering it a key trading partner for New Hampshire.

Republicans face challenges in the midterm elections amid inflation, high gas prices, and Trump’s low approval ratings. Yet, Sununu focuses on economic issues including affordability, healthcare, and energy reforms.
