TSA Revives Gate Access for PreCheck Members at Selected U.S. Airports

In a shift reminiscent of pre-9/11 travel days, some U.S. airports are changing how travelers experience airports. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is now allowing eligible TSA PreCheck members to access security checkpoints without a ticket, letting them enter gate areas. This change is bringing back a tradition that was largely eliminated after the 9/11 attacks 25 years ago.

According to TSA, “As an exclusive benefit for our most trusted travelers, this new program makes it easier to return to the gate for welcomes and send-offs, meet friends during a layover, and enjoy dining and shopping along the way, bringing back the moments that once defined air travel.” This initiative is called Gateside by TSA PreCheck.

The program is free, but members interested in participating must apply online one to three days before their intended airport visit. Approval is needed before visitors head to the airport. Once approved, they can enter through a TSA PreCheck lane using an accepted form of identification. Passes are valid for one calendar day, with allowance for multiple entries on that day.

TSA states that members of other trusted-traveler programs who possess a Known Traveler Number can also apply for gate access. This pilot program is currently available at 13 airports, including Los Angeles International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City International Airport. The TSA plans to roll out the program to additional airports in the coming months.

Before the tragic events of September 11, it was common for individuals without tickets to accompany passengers to their gates. The events prompted significant changes in airport security protocols, with stricter access to secured areas being one key adjustment. This new TSA initiative marks a step back toward those earlier practices.
