Mike Tomlin, a Super Bowl-winning coach with nearly two decades of experience with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has revealed his thoughts on the top player in football. Now working in broadcasting, Tomlin shared his insights on Pro Football Focus’ “NFL Show.” He identified Myles Garrett, a former division rival, as the “best damn player in football.”
Garrett, a former Cleveland Brown now playing for the Los Angeles Rams, set the NFL record for sacks in a single season with 23 in 2025. Tomlin praised Garrett’s ability to achieve this milestone in challenging situations, explaining how Garrett excelled even when circumstances were not conducive to making sacks.
“In the fourth quarter of football games, man, they were behind,” Tomlin said. “Teams were running the football and this guy broke the NFL sack record.”
With Garrett joining a Super Bowl-contending Rams team, his potential only grows. He teams up with future Hall of Fame defensive lineman Aaron Donald, likely providing more opportunities to enhance his legacy. The Rams boast a strong offense led by defending MVP Matthew Stafford and receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. This offensive power means opposing teams will likely resort to passing, giving Garrett more chances for those “money moments” where players make a significant impact.
Garrett’s debut as a Ram occurs Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. Although Aaron Donald will miss this game, he is expected to return for the Week 2 clash with the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
