Momentum Builds for 24-Team College Football Playoff

A major expansion in the College Football Playoff (CFP) could soon take place as talks about a possible 24-team playoff gain traction. The CFP has entered a 30-day negotiation period with ESPN, showing its keen interest in this potential expansion starting as early as 2027, according to Heather Dinich of ESPN.

This development does not yet guarantee that the playoff field will expand beyond the existing 12 teams. Nor does it confirm that 24 teams will ultimately be included if an expansion takes place. Instead, the move highlights that influential conferences like the Big Ten and SEC find it worthwhile to discuss the potential value with ESPN, the event’s exclusive rights holder, as noted by Dinich.

In a statement, the CFP elaborated on the significance of starting discussions with ESPN: “The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential Playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media rights discussion with ESPN. This does not represent a decision or commitment to expand, but rather an opportunity to engage with ESPN and gather additional information to help determine a path forward. The CFP will provide additional updates when appropriate.” Negotiations could commence shortly.

This expansion consideration also brings into question the future of conference championship games. If the expanded playoff can generate at least $200 million in media value, along with substantial revenue from tickets and sponsorships, these games might face elimination. While these championship games boast decades of history, they often lack direct impact on playoff standings.

For instance, Alabama, with a 10-2 record, previously faced Georgia, which had only lost to Alabama earlier in the season. Despite Alabama’s significant defeat by Georgia, it did not affect Alabama’s playoff prospects since losses in these games are not factored into the committee’s decision-making. These games often function more like exhibitions with limited influence on national title aspirations.

With the CFP inching toward more impactful playoff games, the format and value of these new games will become clearer in the coming month.
