Reviving Lahaina: The Journey After the Fire

Lahaina, located on Maui’s west coast, faced a devastating wildfire three years ago. The fire, fueled by extreme winds and drought, destroyed the town and highlighted Hawaii’s severe housing crisis that was already at a critical point before the disaster.

The Morning of the Fire

On August 8, 2023, the Dadez family witnessed smoke just two and a half miles from their home. The blaze, intensified by dried fields from an old sugar cane plantation, seemed distant. However, later that night, the fire reached their neighborhood.

Marilou Dadez, with her four children at home, saw an orange sky. Rhaliyah, the 22-year-old daughter, described it as frightening. The family evacuated with only one suitcase, fleeing in their 2001 Honda.

Escaping the Flames

Rianna, the older daughter, faced the challenge of driving through darkened roads with embers flying past the windshield. Explosive sounds filled the air as gas tanks erupted and structures fell. They were escaping the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century.

The fire consumed 2,170 acres, destroyed over 2,700 structures, and caused at least 102 deaths. It displaced approximately 12,000 people.

Brutal Aftermath

Less than a year after the fire, the homeless population in Hawaii increased by 87%, reaching 11,637 individuals. Many people found temporary shelter in FEMA housing, friends’ garages, or transitional facilities.

Lahaina’s recovery is a long road. Rebuilding homes and lives amid a housing crisis remains a significant challenge.
