In a positive development, over 1.7 million free eggs have been delivered to Texas food banks as part of an antitrust settlement. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that an additional 5.3 million eggs will follow in the coming weeks.
This statewide distribution of free eggs is due to settlements reached with Cal-Maine Foods, Centrum/Versova, and Hickman’s Egg Ranch. The settlements resolve antitrust claims made by the Department of Justice and state attorneys general, which accused these companies of conspiring to raise egg prices between 2022 and 2025.
Under the agreements, the companies will donate more than 7 million eggs to Texas food banks and pay $3.3 million to participating states. Ken Paxton expressed enthusiasm about helping Texans receive free eggs in their communities, pledging to continue efforts to ease financial burdens for families.
The distribution involves coordination with Feeding Texas, the state’s largest hunger-relief organization, and includes 17 food banks. The Houston Food Bank will receive more than 1.5 million eggs. Meanwhile, the North Texas Food Bank in Plano and the Tarrant Area Food Bank in Fort Worth are set to receive over 840,000 eggs each.
Other participating food banks include locations in Austin, San Antonio, Tyler, Corpus Christi, El Paso, Laredo, Odessa, Pharr, Beaumont, Amarillo, Lubbock, Victoria, Abilene, and Wichita Falls. The timing for egg distribution and potential eligibility criteria for recipients remain unclear.
The focus now is to distribute the eggs efficiently and make sure Texans benefit from this significant donation. Ken Paxton’s office and Feeding Texas have yet to comment on specifics regarding the distribution schedules.
