Pink’s Response to Macklemore’s Pro-Palestinian Comments

Singer Pink has recently addressed backlash following Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian remarks at a concert. During his performance at MetLife Stadium, he sang ‘Hind’s Hall’ and chanted ‘Free Palestine,’ leading to criticism from certain fans. An Instagram page named ‘Stop Antisemitism’ labeled the move as ‘awful.’ Pink reposted this video, leading many to perceive her as pro-Israel.

Initially, Pink did not clearly express her stance. On Sept. 11, she used Instagram to clarify her position, stating, ‘I’ve been quiet in my own words for a week, which you know isn’t like me.’ She remarked that the reposted video contained language she had not chosen and emphasized that ‘a repost isn’t a statement.’

‘I was born a Jew,’ Pink stated, explaining that assumptions were made about her beliefs due to the repost and mention of ‘Jew.’ She clarified her belief: Hamas is a terrorist group, Palestinians deserve dignity, and protection of innocent lives is paramount.

Pink shared her experience working with UNICEF and children on both sides of the conflict. She expressed her discomfort with addressing a complex war on social media, noting, ‘I’m not going to recite anybody’s slogan to earn back a follower.’ Her reaction to Macklemore’s remarks stemmed from previous experiences, including a 2014 performance she found offensive due to its perceived antisemitism.

In her statement, Pink mentioned, ‘You don’t get to decide that for us.’ She noted her fear and conveyed that expressing this fright is not propaganda. She’s not calling for any artist’s silence but seeks understanding from others about her concerns.

Pink has consistently stood up for her beliefs, as demonstrated by her protest song, ‘Dear Mr. President.’ She acknowledged the lonely path of standing up for her community, saying, ‘I have stood up for other people’s people my whole career.’

Pink addressed changes she perceives in societal attitudes, sharing, ‘Something has changed in this country, and I can read it in my own comments.’ She emphasized the importance of being understood ‘without being told I’m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed.’

To those criticizing her, Pink stated, ‘You don’t have to agree with me,’ maintaining the unspoken agreement for 25 years that differing opinions are acceptable. She expressed a desire for safety at concerts, regardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Concluding her post, Pink observed Rosh Hashanah and 9/11’s anniversary, stating, ‘Now I’m going to go make dinner for my kids, light the candles, dip some apples in honey.’ Her actions reflect both personal and Jewish traditions.

After the controversy, Macklemore released a video reiterating his message of equality for all, writing, ‘Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial.’
