Oklahoma State’s Historic Upset Over Oregon

In an intense matchup, Oklahoma State secured a surprising victory over sixth-ranked Oregon with a 39-31 score in Stillwater, Oklahoma. This marked the biggest upset so far in the 2026 college football season. The Cowboys achieved their first win in over a year, having gone winless in the Big 12 with a 1-11 record last season.

Despite entering the game as 24.5-point underdogs after a 24-10 defeat to Tulsa in Week 1, Oklahoma State managed to end a 12-game losing streak by defeating a top-10 team. As fans stormed the field, first-year coach Eric Morris expressed his pride in his team, stating, “Everybody counted them out. I’m proud of those kids.”

Oregon struggled in the final quarter, making critical mistakes including a costly fumble by running back Dierre Hill Jr. The Ducks also failed to convert a crucial fourth and 8 from their own 33-yard line, giving Oklahoma State the opportunity to extend their lead with a field goal.

Statistically, Oklahoma State dominated with 554 yards of total offense compared to Oregon’s 281 yards. They also doubled Oregon’s first downs, achieving 25 to Oregon’s 12. After the game, Oregon coach Dan Lanning remarked, “We got our ass kicked in a lot of areas.”

This loss may have dashed Oregon quarterback Dante Moore’s Heisman Trophy hopes. With 20 scouts from 13 NFL teams present, Moore only completed 5 of 15 passes for 45 yards in the first half. Although he improved in the second half with two touchdowns, he was overshadowed by Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker.

Mestemaker impressed with two touchdown passes and a total of 317 yards. He put Oklahoma State in the lead for good with a 10-yard touchdown scramble, reminiscent of Fernando Mendoza’s play in last year’s Indiana championship game. Mestemaker commented, “I just leaped and felt like I was in the air for a year.”

Wyatt Young of Oklahoma State also scored a touchdown while being defended by Oregon’s Davon Benjamin. This game further damaged Oregon’s rankings, which had already dropped from second to sixth after a struggle against Boise State last week. Last year, Oregon had defeated Oklahoma State 69-3, showcasing the drastic change in performance.

The game was delayed due to lightning and thunderstorms, adding another layer to this dramatic and unexpected outcome for Oklahoma State.
