Overview of Chicago’s 2027 Mayoral Election Candidates

The next Chicago mayoral election is scheduled for February 23, 2027. Ten candidates have formally announced their campaigns so far, with more expected to declare in the months ahead. This group consists of seasoned Chicago political figures alongside fresh faces.

If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote on February 23, a runoff between the top two contenders will be held on April 6, 2027. The inauguration will follow in May.

Declared Candidates

• Brandon Johnson – The current mayor, Brandon Johnson, has announced he will seek a second term. He aims to entrench his progressive agenda during a four-year tenure at City Hall.
• Willie Wilson – Businessman Willie Wilson is entering the mayoral race for the fourth time. Renowned for his business achievements and charitable efforts, Wilson aims to advocate conservative positions.
• Alexi Giannoulias – Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias enters the race with substantial campaign funds and union support, establishing himself early as a frontrunner.
• Matthew Brewer – Previously chairing the Chicago Housing Authority board, Brewer is leveraging his government experience and South Side origins in his bid for the mayoral office.
• George Cardenas – Former Alderman George Cardenas is calling for more efficient city governance, drawing upon his experience as Cook County Board of Review Commissioner.
• Mike Quigley – U.S. Representative Mike Quigley is vying for mayor, stressing the need for fiscal cuts at City Hall. He has a background in local and federal governance.
• Susana Mendoza – Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is seeking to become Chicago’s first Latina mayor, presenting herself as a counter to progressive policies.
• Joe Holberg – A former math teacher and entrepreneur, Holberg stands as a political outsider with experience in overcoming adversity.
• John Kelly – Lobbyist John Kelly is engaged in the mayoral race, drawing from extensive experience working with influential political figures.
• Lisa Nee – Cardiologist and whistleblower Lisa Nee is running as a political outsider, having previously advocated for healthcare reform at key Senate hearings.

Undecided

• Maria Pappas – Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has expressed intent to run but remains focused on her current role and popular radio segment.

Withdrawn Candidate

• Liam Stanton – Originally in the race, tech entrepreneur Liam Stanton withdrew his candidacy in August, endorsing Giannoulias.
