Controversial Call Reverses Saints’ Defensive Touchdown Against Lions

1 week ago 0

The New Orleans Saints believed they had scored a defensive touchdown against the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon, seemingly leveling the score. Early in the second quarter, the Lions led 7-0 when New Orleans defensive end Chase Young forced a fumble from Detroit’s quarterback Jared Goff. The play appeared straightforward as the ball went backward with Goff’s arm not in motion. Saints safety Jonas Sanker scooped up the ball and returned it for a touchdown.

However, after a detailed review, officials ruled that Goff had initiated his throwing motion. The intent to throw the ball forward meant it was an incomplete pass. Mike Pereira, an NFL rules analyst for Fox Sports, explained, “Throwing motion begins with moving the ball up, not necessarily where the hand and ball end. Though the ball moved backward, Goff’s intention for a forward pass overturned the play as an incomplete pass.” This rule has prompted confusion due to its reliance on intent rather than the ball’s actual trajectory.

The decision nullified the Saints’ touchdown, forcing the Lions to punt later in the drive. They maintained their 7-0 lead going into halftime. Such a reversal, purely based on the quarterback’s intent, has been one of the most unusual decisions of the season’s early days.
