Sean McVay Reflects on Coaching Journey and Rams’ Resurgence

19 minutes ago 0

Sean McVay, head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, has a strong aversion to losing. Since taking the role in 2017, his tenure has featured only one losing season. However, following the 2022 season, McVay contemplated taking a hiatus to explore media ventures.

After securing a victory against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, the Rams struggled the following year, ending with a 5-12 record. During an interview on 60 Minutes, McVay expressed finding himself in a challenging situation and reflected on how losses impacted his mindset.

“I was ready to run away from coaching and hide behind a convenient narrative of some media opportunities,” McVay shared.

His wife, Veronika Khomyn, offered him a stark reminder of his leadership expectations. McVay recounted a conversation where she emphasized that taking a year off didn’t align with the leader he aimed to be. This conversation served as a crucial wake-up call.

“I think it was the wake-up call that I needed. … I would have been quitting because I couldn’t handle the losses,” McVay confessed.

The Rams improved significantly, achieving consecutive 10-7 records, followed by a 12-5 season in 2025, leading them to the NFC Championship. Although they lost to the Super Bowl winners, Seattle Seahawks, their performance was commendable.

As McVay continues his journey with the Rams, the team has made strategic moves, such as trading for Myles Garrett and coaxing Aaron Donald out of retirement. Despite a Week 1 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia, the Rams are optimistic about their Monday night game against the New York Giants.
