Authorities have arrested a transgender 19-year-old, Alexandros Paporakis, for allegedly planning a mass shooting at a Hindu temple near Chicago. A tip from a coworker prevented the attack, according to police statements.

Paporakis, from Palatine, was taken into custody after allegedly intending to open fire at a temple located in Aurora, a suburb of Chicago. He faces charges, including one felony count of making a terrorist threat and a felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon. Cook County has detained Paporakis without bond, and a healthcare order has been issued due to his hormone treatments and treatment for ADHD, depression, and anxiety, according to NBC Chicago.

Prosecutors claim Paporakis approached the temple with a modified rifle, 300 rounds of ammunition, body armor, and tactical gear. The attack was aborted when the rifle malfunctioned, leading him to return home. Paporakis later researched online on how to fix the gun and allegedly informed a colleague of his intentions, prompting the coworker to report the threat. This led Mount Prospect Police to act, obtaining a search warrant and detaining Paporakis before the alleged plan could proceed.

The authorities commended those who reported the incident and urged others to do the same when encountering suspicious activities. Lucas Rothaar, the acting special agent from the FBI Chicago Field Office, expressed gratitude towards the individual who reported the incident, highlighting how acts of courage have often thwarted violence or terror attacks.

Police gained a lead from the tip, identifying a red Acura linked to Paporakis. Surveillance footage showed him entering the temple parking lot briefly before leaving. Later, he was spotted heading to his residence on Rand Road, shared with his mother. Upon executing a search warrant, police uncovered a rifle, a loaded magazine, multiple rounds of ammunition, and tactical gear.

The discovery included an eight-page manifesto detailing the alleged attack plan and Paporakis’ extremist views. The writings reportedly contained hate speech against various racial groups, showing Paporakis had plans to target these communities maliciously. Paporakis’ coworkers at Taco Bell received a concerning message, spurring them to report the incident.

A judge has scheduled Paporakis’ next court appearance for October 30, keeping him in custody given the potential threat.

The Hindu temple acknowledged the security threat and has enhanced security measures. A message on the temple’s website stated their commitment to safety, implementing additional armed security and further protective steps for devotees and staff alike.
