The Enduring Legacy of Jackie, the Beloved Bald Eagle

Jackie, an internet-famous bald eagle, passed away after battling a mysterious illness. Her story captivated and united people worldwide, with responses pouring in from nearly 200 individuals who reflected on what Jackie meant to them.

Jackie and her mate, Shadow, became celebrities through a livestream of their nest overlooking Big Bear Lake. This eagle duo attracted thousands of fans who watched them raise chicks season after season. Now, as fans mourn Jackie, they are reminded of the themes of motherhood, devotion, and perseverance she embodied.

Jackie you were the HEART of the world! You united the world no matter what race, religion or politics you were, you gave us all HOPE!” wrote Rosemarie Schoen of Williamsburg, Va.

Many saw Jackie as an exemplary parent, akin to what people aspire to be. Her unwavering strength and care for her mate, Shadow, and their eaglets left a lasting impact.

“Jackie and Shadow were parents we all pray we can be,” said Kathy Wimmer of North Carolina. “Loving, protective, teacher, provider — Jackie was all that and more.”

Jackie and Shadow’s romantic and enduring partnership impressed many. They paired eight years ago and faced challenges such as attacks from ravens and rival eagles, yet they remained committed to their family.

“Through all the attacks from ravens and rival eagles, through hard winds, cold and heavy snows, Jackie and Shadow protected and provided for their eaglets,” said Iowa’s Tami Schmeisser.

Some viewers found solace in Jackie and Shadow during the tumultuous COVID-19 lockdowns. The eagles became sources of hope and joy, helping individuals navigate personal challenges.

Jackie symbolized resilience in the face of adversity, inspiring viewers with her unwavering dedication, even in fierce winter storms.

“Last year, when Jackie had triplet eagles, she was nesting on them when they were only days old and she was hit with a HUGE and terrible snowstorm,” recalled Brittany de Temple of Walnut Creek.

Fans cherished watching Jackie nurtur her chicks—a powerful predator showing gentle care.

“I was always amazed at how she tore delicate shreds of meat from her catch and then so tenderly fed her chicks,” said Long Beach resident Erica Motamed.

The future may hold changes for Shadow, but fans continue to support him, hoping his legacy and Jackie’s will live on.

“Something has happened and I believe in his own way he is going to be grieving and I feel so sad for him,” said North Carolina’s Wendi Cornett.

Fans honored Jackie’s influence by conserving land near her nest and deepening respect for wildlife. They aim to protect the habitat Jackie and Shadow cherished.

“Seeing Jackie and Shadow’s devoted fans come together to protect the home they shared from human development is the most meaningful tribute to Jackie for the remarkable legacy she has left us,” Annette Gray from South Pasadena said.
