A former staff member for Senator John Fetterman has voiced concerns about the Pennsylvania Democrat’s dedication to his congressional duties. This follows a recent Wall Street Journal report depicting Fetterman as disengaged from his responsibilities on Capitol Hill.

The former staffer, given anonymity due to current employment, supports the Journal’s portrayal of Fetterman showing “little interest” in Senate responsibilities. The allegations are in line with claims from an X account named “Former Fetterman Staffers,” purportedly managed by his past campaign and Senate aides. This account aims to inform Pennsylvanians about Fetterman’s conduct.

“Hello, Twitter. We’re a group of former campaign & Senate staffers for John Fetterman who are disgusted with what he’s become,” the account stated on September 4. “If you were troubled by [the Wall Street Journal story]… trust us, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s even worse than you thought.”

The account, verified by two former staffers, plans to share more stories on September 14, coinciding with the Senate’s return after its summer recess. As of Monday, the account had around 162,000 followers, sparked by the Journal’s report centered on interviews with former staffers and allegations of Fetterman’s limited interest in congressional duties.

Fetterman labeled the journalistic profile as a “hit piece,” claiming it relied on dissatisfied former staff accounts, “lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears,” and unspecified sources. Newsweek contacted the senator’s office for further comments.

Pressure Mounts on Senator Fetterman

Elected in 2022, Fetterman faces calls to resign following reports suggesting an ongoing apathy towards Senate duties. Claims include skipping hearings, focusing on media appearances and pro-Israel advocacy over constituency work, and avoiding meetings with constituents.

One instance involved the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where officials sought discussions on vaccines and Medicaid cuts. Fetterman reportedly accused them of seeking “free trips to D.C.” despite acknowledging the text, he called it a “dumb joke” and expressed apologies.

The former staffer described the CHOP incident as disheartening, noting it involved children and cancer patients affected by policy changes. Fetterman defended meeting Pennsylvania health officials both virtually and in person.

Allegations of Disinterest in Duties

The former staffer claimed Fetterman avoids Pennsylvania-specific matters, rarely engages in state travel, and exhibits “very little empathy.” Fetterman allegedly needs to be persuaded to fulfill basic job responsibilities and shows partiality only to Israel-related topics.

Staff reportedly created strategies to limit Fetterman’s interactions with junior employees, aiming to shield them from unpleasant interactions. Fetterman’s high staff turnover aligns with Senate averages, though the visual impact of senior aide departures stands out.

Despite turnover, staff remain committed to public service, endeavoring under challenging conditions.

Fetterman’s Relationship with Democrats and Republicans

Initially perceived as a progressive Democrat, Fetterman has distanced himself from the party’s left wing, growing closer to the GOP. This shift impacts voter appeal.

A recent poll showed 73% of Republicans view Fetterman favorably, surpassing Republican Senator Dave McCormick, while only 22% of Democrats hold the same view. Another poll highlighted only 19% Democrat approval versus 69% disapproval.

Speculation surrounds Fetterman potentially leaving the Democratic party, though he denies immediate plans. His statements, including an appearance at the GOP midterm convention, affirm his shift in political stance. Fetterman declared himself a “common-sense Democrat,” opposing extreme views and socialism.
