What to Expect at the 78th Emmy Awards

The 78th Emmy Awards take place on Monday night and will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay, known for her role in Law & Order: SVU. The ceremony will be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock, beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. E! will air pre-show coverage starting at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

This year, the Emmys have expanded the Creative Arts Emmys into a two-night event, celebrating various categories such as casting, guest actors, game shows, documentaries, and the work of behind-the-scenes craftspeople. Notably, Rob Reiner received a posthumous Emmy for his guest role on The Bear. Mariska Hargitay, apart from hosting, has also won two awards for her documentary My Mom Jayne.

The main event will feature 19 awards, covering categories like top comedy series, top drama series, and best actor and actress. In the comedy series category, familiar shows like Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and The Bear are contenders, alongside new entries Widow’s Bay and Margo’s Got Money Troubles. In the drama category, last year’s winner The Pitt will compete against titles such as Pluribus, Slow Horses, and The Diplomat. Several actors from The Pitt have received their first nominations, as have Dale Dickey and Kate O’Flynn for Widow’s Bay. The ceremony will feature a musical performance by Noah Kahan, who will sing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” during the In Memoriam segment. The presenters set to appear include Alan Cumming, Sally Field, Jon Hamm, Marcello Hernández, Niecy Nash-Betts, Keke Palmer, Amy Poehler, Florence Pugh, Rachel Sennott, and Zendaya.
